About Sarah Marie Hendricks

Sarah M. Hendricks - Oshtemo

Sarah Joslyn Hendricks walked on, on April 18, 2012. Sarah Joslyn was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on May 9, 1978 to Mary Wesley and Carl Joslyn. She attended Galesburg-Augusta schools, and graduated from Athens High School in 1996. She studied at Kellogg Community College, and graduated with certifications in corrections, and in landscaping and horticulture.

She was married to Lonnie Hendricks on December 1, 2009. Sarah was a member of the Nottawaseppi Band of Huron Potawatomi. She was a direct descendant through her grandmother Irene Wesley of Steven Pamptopee and his father Phineas Pamptopee, both of whom were prominent Chiefs of the Huron Potawatomi. Before federal recognition of the Huron Potawatomi was restored on December 19, 1995, Sarah was a member of the Lake Superior Band of Bad River Chippewa Indians. She was also the great-great granddaughter of Chief Buffalo, the last Chief of that Tribe, whose profile appears on the Buffalo head nickel. Sarah was proud of her Potawatomi heritage, and participated in powwows, gatherings and other Tribal and intertribal cultural events. She was a competitive traditional dancer, and was also highly proficient in Tae Kwan Do.

She worked in various positions for her Tribe, and obtained the first federal grant for the Elders' Council, which is now known as the Elders' Committee. Sarah was known for her quick wit, cheerfulness and good nature.

Sarah M. Hendricks was survived by her husband Lonnie of Oshtemo, her brothers Bradley Potter, Robert Potter, her mother Mary Wesley, and her grandmother Irene Wesley all of the Huron Potawatomi Reservation, and a special uncle John Joslyn from Portage, MI. She leaves her nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles which she cherished. She was preceded in death by her father Carl Joslyn...
