About Sarah Ann Higbee
Sarah Ann Voorhees was daughter of Isaac and Sarah Ann Mount Voorhees of
Batavia, Ohio.
She married John Somers Higbee, 16 February 1826 at Batavia where she was born,
10 April, 1805. She and her husband heard the gospel from Elders Calvin Wilson
and Lyman Wight who baptized and confirmed them about the 1st of May, 1832.
On February 20, 1833 they sold their possessions for $600.00 and moved to
Jackson County, Missouri. They enjoyed themselves here until they were driven
out in company with five other families. Sarah Ann was very ill and her life
was despaired of. They had no teams so could only take what they could carry on
their backs, building a shanty on the banks of the Missouri River for shelter.
Food was very limited and they hunted wild animals for meat. They were forced
to move 6 times. In many places they fished for a living.
Sarah Ann and her son, John Mount, crossed the Mississippi River, John driving,
29 March on their trip west. On the 19th, John S. Higbee went back to meet his
family and all arrived at Mount Pisgah the last of May.
Sarah Voorhees passed away at Mount Pisgah, Iowa, 15 June 1846, leaving four
children and her husband. The trials, ill health, lack of nourishing food were
hard to bear at times and she sealed her testimony to the truthfulness of the
Gospel with her life at the early age of forty-one years.

Thy name is enrolled in the Lambs Book of Life and if thou are faithful to cultivate the principals that is implanted in Thy bosom. Thy name shall never be blotted out and the blessing of wisdom and intelligence shall be given to Thee and thou shalt ever be a blessing to Thy companion and Thy children and thou shalt have wisdom to bring them up for God and the spirit of meekness and long forbearance shall be given to Thee and the gathering of the Saints shall be accomplished in Thy day and thou shall get to see thousands and tens of thousands rejoice in the house of the Lord, and it will be the delight of your heart to pay Thy devotions to the Most High. Thou shall yet rejoice upon that land with Thy companion and with Thy children which shall flow with abundance of corn, wine, and oil, and where milk and honey shall flow and many of Thy acquaintances shall come inquiring for Thee, which will cause Thy heart to rejoice and enable Thee too sing praises to God, and I seal these blessings upon Thee in the name of Thy Redeemer, forever and ever Amen.
