About Sarah Higgins

Biography

Sarah Matthews (aka Mathews) was born about 1755 in the vicinity of Harpswell or Windham, Province (now State) of Maine. Her approximate birth year is calculated from her reported age of 67 on the date of her death, which occurred on September 21, 1822 per her obituary published in the Hancock Gazette & Penobscot Patriot (Belfast, Maine). Sarah's parentage is pending additional research. With research in progress, possible parents include Samuel and Elizabeth (Brown) Matthews of New Marblehead (now Windham), Falmouth, or Harpswell; or William Matthews, who was residing in Bath in 1790; or John Matthews, who was residing in Harpswell in 1790.

Sarah and Benjamin Higgins filed their marriage intention in Harpswell on August 20, 1770 and married on September 27, 1770. At the time of publishment, Sarah was described as being "of Harpswell" and Benjamin "of Georgetown" (that part now West Bath).

Sarah and Benjamin resided 1st in Bath, Province (now State) of Maine where they began their family. Per the 1790 Fed. Census, Benjamin's household was enumerated with 13 members. By 1800, Sarah and Benjamin had removed their family to Camden, Province (now State) of Maine where they would live out the rest of their lives. Per the published Higgins's Genealogy, researched and compiled by Katherine Chapin Higgins in 1918, Sarah and Benjamin had at least 10 children described as 5 sons and 5 daughters.

In the 1800, 1810, and 1820 Federal Censuses for Camden, Benjamin is described as "engaged in agriculture."

Leaving her husband a widower, Sarah passed away in Camden on September 21, 1822. Her husband Benjamin passed away a year later on October 9, 1823.
