Robert-1 Long (John) was
- born about 1590 in St. Albans, Herfordshire, England; and
- died 9 Jan 1663/4, age 73 in Charlestown, MA;
- Occupation: innkeeper
- He appears to belong to the London family of innholders, and
- left London 7 July 1635 on the ship Defence,
- bringing with him a certificate signed by the minister and justice of the peace at Dunstable, Bedfordshire, listing the names and ages of his second wife, his ten children, and his servants.
- In 1636 he started the "Three Cranes Inn" or "Grand Ordinary" at Charlestown, which remained in his family for nearly a century.
- The building had been built in 1629 at the foot of town hill.
- It was occupied by the First Church of Charlestown and
- later was called the "Great House" and used as the Town Hall.
- It was burned down 17 June 1777, when Charlestown was set afire by British troops evacuating the city.
- The Long family on Nantucket, and probably other parts of the New England coast, trace back to him.

Robert Long, of St. Albans, was married Oct 3, 1614, to Sarah Taylor
- who was bapt. May 29, 1595,
- daughter of John and Margaret (Willmote) Taylor.
- Their children, recorded in the Abbey registers, were:
- Michale, bapt July 30, 1615;
- Sarah, bapt Oct 13, 1616;
- Robert, bapt. Jan 17, 1618-9;
- Elizabeth, bapt Nov 14, 1621;
- Anne, bapt June 1, 1623;
- Martha (should be Mary), bapt Sept 5, 1627;
- John, bapt Feb 10, 1628-9.
- This is the last record of the family in St Albans registers; and they moved to Dunstable, Bedfordshire, where Zacherie was bapt Oct 20, 1630. Robert’s wife Sarah died at the latter place, and was buried Dec 12, 1631. He married a second wife Elizabeth, who came with him to America, in the “Defense” in 1635, his age being given 45, his wife’s age 30, and the children’s ages, Michael 20, Sarah 18, Robert 16, Elizabeth 12, Anne 10, Mary 9, Rebecca 8, John 6, Zacherie 4, and Joshua 9 months. Rebecca’s baptism is not recorded.
