From Des Gorham's book "On Gunnary Creek"

Sarah emigrated to NSW as a single woman but in the company of her aunt and uncle Mary and John Stead. Mary Stead (nee Hills) was the sister of Philadelphia (Philly)), Sarah Gorham's mother.

Their voyage to Australia had more than the usual amount of adventure. The sailing ship "Juliana" which left England's shores on October 20, 1838, with 141 adult passengers and 103 children, was wrecked at Green's Point in Table Bay on the Cape of Good Hope on Januray19, 1839. The passengers, all of whom were apparently rescues, were provided wit lodging in Caoe Town until two other ships, the Morayshire and the Lady Hay, were chartered to rtake the passengers on to Sydney.Sarah and her Aunt and Uncle continued their journey in the Morayshire on Febuary 19, 1839 and arrived without further mishap in Sydney 58 days later on May 20.

Sarah Gorham, 23 when she arrived in NSW, listed her occupation as dressmaker and housemaid. It is likely that she worked in the employ of William Lawson (as did her uncle John Stead0 . Within 5 months of her arrival she married William Newnham in the Parish of St Lawrence, Sydney with Mary Stead acting as one of her witnesses.
