About Sarah Mabel Orwig

The above photo was found on FamilySearch.org. There is another photo of Sarah in 1925 which is from a school yearbook, and Sarah is shown in the upper left corner of the page. Since this photo was of the senior class of 1925 at which time Sarah Mabel Madsen would have been 18 years old, it seems likely that it is Sarah Mabel Madsen. The school yearbook was for West High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, showed that Sarah was the president of the girl reserves in her sophomore year, secretary of the swimming club in her freshman year, and a member of the hiking club and was also involved with tennis. In 1930 Sarah was living in Salt Lake City at the Dr. Groves L.D.S. Hospital and working as a nursing student.

Sarah was the first child born to Anton Elmer Madsen and Sarah (Nelson) Madsen on July 24, 1907. Sadly, her mother passed away in 1921 when Sarah was only 14 years old. I'm sure Sarah had to assume a lot of the household duties after her mother's death, since she was the oldest of 7 children. Sarah's father passed away February 1, 1936, in Kemmerer, Lincoln County, Wyoming, when Sarah was just 28 years old.

Five years later Sarah married Jack Gordon Orwig in 1941. She was listed as Sarah M. Orwig, 38, returning to the United States from Edmonton, Canada, in about 1945. Her friend in Canada she had been staying with was John Glasgow, 5524--111th Street, Edmonton, Alberta. She was going to 13520 Victory Boulevard in Van Nuys, Los Angeles County, California, to resume her residence. Her passage was paid by her husband. She had $150 with her a the time. She was 5'-2" tall with gray hair and blue eyes. She was working as a housewife and was born in Bramwell, Idaho, July 24, 1907.

Previously, according to public records found for Sarah on Ancestry.com, she was living in Bramwell, Canyon County, Idaho, in 1910 with her parents and siblings, listed as follows in the census record: Elmer, 28, Sarah, 23, Mabel, 2, Nyel, 1-1/2 years old, and Mary, 1 month old. All 3 children were all born in Idaho. Elmer's father was born in Denmark, his mother in Utah, and both of Sarah's parents were born in Utah. Elmer was working as a laborer on a farm. He owned his own home but had a mortgage. Elmer's father, Anton Peter Madsen, was the brother of my 2nd great grandfather, Christian Madsen, who came to America in 1853 when he was 9 years old.

By 1920 the Madsen's had moved to Diamondville, Lincoln County, Wyoming, and were listed in the census as follows: Elmer, 37, Sarah, 34, Mabel, 12, Nyel, 11, Mary, 9, Lenore, 8, Nellie, 5, Jennie, 3, and Daisy Ferne, 1. Elmer was working as a hoisting engineer. Sarah Mabel's mother, Sarah, passed away the following year. In 1928 Sarah was living at 1463 East 13th South in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was listed as a student in a U.S. City Directory.

In the 1930 census Sarah was listed as being 20 years old, living in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Dr. Groves L.D.S. Hospital working as a student nurse. In the 1930 census for Diamondville, Lincoln County, Wyoming, her father, Elmer, 48, was working as a "barn boss" for a coal company, and was living with his children, Nyel, 21, Lenore, 18, Jennie, 13, and Daisy Fern, 11. Sarah's brother Nyel was working as a coal miner, and her sister, Lenore was working as a deputy post mistress for the U.S. Government.

Ten years later in 1940 Sarah was living at 3025 Gibbons Drive in Alameda, California, where she was listed in a California Voter Registration record as a Republican and was working as a stewardess. Perhaps that is how she met her husband, Jack Gordon Orwig. They were married October 25, 1941, in Yuma, Arizona. He was listed as an aviator on their marriage license, and they were living in Glendale at the time of their marriage at 724 Prospect Drive. By 1946 they were living in Venice, California, according to an obituary for her brother, Elmer Nyel, who died in a mining accident in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He had been working there as a coal miner. At the time of his death he was only 37 years old. Sarah had already lost her mother, father, baby sister and brother before she was 40 years old.

In 1952 Sarah and Jack were living at 1058 E. Cypress Avenue in Burbank, California, and Jack was working as a pilot. By 1956 they were at the same address, but Jack was working as an employee at the Los Angeles International Airport, which in Inglewood, California. Previously in 1927 he had been attending school at East High School in Denver, Colorado. He married Katherine G. Burnett there in 1931, and they had at least one child, William Burnett Orwig, born May 23, 1927, in Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming. William passed away in July of 1985.

In 1958 Sarah and Jack were living at 512 S. Bay Front on Balboa Island, which is a very exclusive section of Orange County, California. They were both listed in the California Voter Registration Record that year as Republicans. In 1960, Sarah was listed at 2709 Cove, Corona Del Mar, which is another very exclusive beach community in Orange county. Jack was not listed in that voter registration record for some reason. In 1962 Sarah was listed at 3111 Bayside Drive in Corona Del Mar in the California Voter Registration record as a Republican, but again, Jack was not listed. Perhaps by then they had separated or divorced.

A Jack Orwig (spelled incorrectly as Orwitg) was listed in a U.S. City Directory for San Jose, California, in 1963, and was living at 935 Pomeroy Avenue, Apartment #16, in Santa Clara. There was also a Jack Oertwig living at 1001 W. Lambert Road in La Habra, California, in 1993, but I don't know if either of these Jack's were the same Jack Orwig who married Sarah Madsen.

In 1975 and 1976 Sarah was living at 966 Calle Aragon, Laguna Hills, California. She passed away March 16, 1989, in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California. The California Death Index record showed she was born July 24, 1907. The U.S. Social Security Death Index showed that her last residence was in San Juan Capistrano.

Her husband Jack Gordon Orwig, born July 18, 1909, died at the age of 93 on February 20, 2003, in San Juan Capistrano, California. Could they have gotten back together or remarried sometime after the 1960's or 1970's? Could he have come to San Juan Capistrano to take care of her before her death if she was ill before she died? We will never know the answer to these questions.

There is a wonderful story about how the swallows (birds) come back to San Juan Capistrano after their migration about the same time each year. I wonder if Sarah enjoyed seeing the swallows return. She was my 2nd cousin twice removed, however, unfortunately, I never met her. Her grandfather, Anton Peter Madsen, was the brother of my second great grandfather, Christian Madsen, who left Idaho in 1883 and moved with his extended family to Safford, Arizona, where he passed away in 1921. Later his eldest daughter moved to California and by 1930 was living in Los Angeles.
