About Sarah Harriet Selwyn

Sarah Selwyn, known among Maori as 'Mata Pihopa' (Mother Bishop), never wavered in support of her husband, although she had a lonely time. Selwyn was away for long periods, sometimes for as much as 10 months a year... Sarah Selwyn suffered a good deal from ill health, and had few friends; only Mary Martin and Caroline Abraham were close to her. She found life much more agreeable after her return to England with Selwyn in 1868. She lived a long and contented life at Lichfield, until her death in 1907. Source:
