The details of Sarah Jinning's birth are unknown. She was born about 1751 - 1755, probably in or near Perquimans or Pasquotank Counties, in North Carolina. There are wills for several Jennings/Jinnings in Pasquotank County in the later decades, but none mention Sarah.

In 1771 she married Benjamin Simpson in Pasquotank County. They don't appear in the records again, until they appear, in 1790, under the name Benjamin Simpson, in the Rowan County census. They are shown with two males over 16, four males under 16, and six females. Notably, there are three Jinnings living nearby: William, John, and Robert, all with young families, and all appearing to be about the same age, born about 1755-1765.

In the 1800 census for the Salisbury district of Rowan County, Benjamin Jr appears to age over 45, with one son 10-16, two daughters under 10 and 10-16, and a wife over 45. Son John Simpson is also on the same page, age 26-45, with a wife 16-26, one daughter and three sons under 10, and a son 16-26. Son Benjamin Simpson III appears on the previous page, age 16-26, with a wife 26-45, and four sons under 10.

Also appearing, next to Benjamin Jr. in the 1800 census, is Nicholas Simpson and his wife, both age 26-45, with two sons and two daughters under 10. Nicholas is too young to have been the third, unknown son of Benjamin Sr., mentioned in Benjamin Sr's 1748 tax record, and he's not a son of Benjamin Jr's brother Samuel. Although not listed in any other record in relation to Benjamin and Sarah, he must be one of their older sons.

In the 1810 census, Benjamin Jr and Sarah are over 45, with one male under 10, one 10-16, and female 16-26. The female likely is a daughter, with 2 sons. Their sons John (age at least about 35) and Benjamin III (age at least about 36), are living next door to Benjamin and Sarah. There is also a Basil, relationship unknown, with a female, both age 16-26, and no children; presumably, he is a son or grandson. He is young enough to have been the son of one of Benjamin and Sarah's older sons.

Benjamin and Sarah had known children Lettie (born about 1772), who married John Hobbs Adams in 1789, later moving with him to Letcher County, KY; Nicholas {born about 1774); John (about 1775); Benjamin III (about 1778); Lucy (about 1780), who married Sion Coats in 1802 [their bondsman was John Adams, who was likely her brother-in-law of the same name, the husband of her sister Lettie Simpson]; and possibly Isaac (about 1786), William (about 1789), and Basil (born about 1790).

Their son John is mentioned in Benjamin Jr's probate record.

The details of Sarah's death and burial are unknown; it's likely she died sometime around 1810. After her death, Benjamin married a woman named Ann, last name unknown, who appears in his will.
