About Sarah Blake Sturgis

Wife of wealthy activist Francis George Shaw. She supported his desire to see social reform, and especially, she helped champion the idea of a free black human being. The family moved to Staten Island when Sarah, suffering from an eye ailment, sought the services of the kindly, and somewhat eccentric, Samuel Mackenzie Elliott, a prominent "oculist". Elliott would later be commissioned Colonel of the 79th New York Inf. (Cameron's Highlanders). His service was cut short when his horse was shot out from under him, injuring his back. He was later appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers. Sarah's son, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw brought much pride and respect to the family when he accepted the commission of colonel of the 54th Mass. Inf., one of the first black regiments in the war to endure battle. His, and his men's deaths at Battery Wagner, S.C., proved once and for all, that a black man, given the opportunity, would not only fight for his freedom, but that he would do it with distinction. Sarah and her husband, Francis, upon learning that Robert was buried in a mass grave with his men as an insult, declared that they would not have had it any other way.

1/10/2015 Following the line from Capen Family (1500s-1600s) down to Calvin Coolidge on This is where I got birth, death, marriage, spouse and most other info while drilling down then following back up and then down again to connect President Grant and President Calvin Coolidge, even though I previously found Grant. I had seen a connection with Coolidge. That would Only be on the people that I made and copied this note on, then took it further to Col Robert Gould Shaw. CTC:
