~MY THOMPSON ANCESTOR~ In Pursuit of Paradise, p. 62 "In 1683 Mr. James Blakeman built a mill ("to grind ye town's corn")near Peck's Mill Pond in Stratford. Less than 3 years later, on Christmas Eve, 1686, Blakeman swapped the mill with Ambrose Thompson for a share in the new Woodbury plantation. The mill remained in the Thompson family for over 75 years until Ambrose's grandson Ebnezer sold it to Theophilus Nichols. The millers were important men in town, and the mills became informal forums for discussion of politics, weather & crops."
Probably in Stratford, Ambrose married SARAH WELLES, daughter of JOHN & ELIZABETH WELLES, my immigrant ancestors & prominent founders of Stratford. Ambrose & Sarah were the parents of 6 known children including my ancestor, SARAH THOMPSON, who married JOSEPH BIRDSEY on 10 Jun 1708 in Stratford and were the parents of REV. NATHAN BIRDSEYE, also buried in this cemetery.
