About Sarah Whitmer

In 1831 Sarah Jackson's family lived near Kirtland, Ohio. Several of her family affiliated with the Mormon Church. Sarah worked in the Joseph Smith Jr. home for a short time at Kirtland. She traveled alone to Jackson County, Missouri, arriving in December 1832. There she married John Whitmer in 1833. Sarah and John moved to Clay County, Missouri, in 1833. They lived near Liberty, Missouri on the Michael Arthur Farm. Her husband John was set apart as one of presidency of the Missouri (Mormon) Church in 1834. Sarah and John returned to Kirtland, Ohio, later in 1834. Her husband served as Church Historian and editor of the church periodical, Messenger and Advocate. Sarah and John returned to Missouri in 1836 settling at Far West, Caldwell County. John helped lay out the town of Far West. In 1838, the extended Whitmer family were asked to leave Far West. John's parents and brothers resettled in Richmond, Missouri. John and Sarah also lived in Richmond about one year. Sarah and John returned to Far West, Missouri, in 1839, while the remaining Whitmer Family stayed in the Richmond, Missouri, area. Sarah and John amassed a large amount of land, including the former Mormon Temple Lot at Far West. Sarah and John had five children. John farmed and raised horses and mules. Sarah began suffering from a urinary problem in 1873, eventually succumbing as a result. Sarah is buried in nearby Kingston Cemetery. John outlived Sarah by five years and was buried by Sarah's side.
