About Sarah Martha Whitner

Mrs. Sarah Martha Whitner, widow of the late Major John C. Whitner. died Tuesday night, at 11 o'clock, at the resldence of her her son-in-law, Mr. B. C. Milner, in Louisville, Ky.

Mrs. Whitner was the daughter of Colonel John Addlson and Sarah Rootes Cobb, of Athens, Ga.. and was born in that city August 10, 1831. She was the youngest sister of Generals Howell Cobb and Thomas R. R. Cobb and Major John B. Cobb. On September 28, 1853, she married Major John C. Whitner, and for a short time lived near Tallahassee, Fla., but moved to West Point, Ga., and later, in 1864, removed to Atlanta, where she has lived continuously since.

Mrs. Whitner united with the Presbyterian church in early life, and was a consistent member for more than fifty years. In all relations of life, she was a model of the true southern woman—modest, gentle, reserved and courteous, but firm in her convictions, and candid in her converse and conduct.

She is survived by her seven children: John A. Whitner, Thomas C. Whitner, Charles F. Whitner, Miss Eliza S. Whitner, Mrs. Warren Howard, Mrs. B. C. Milner, and Mrs. W. J. Milner.

She is also survived by the following nephews and nieces: Judge Howell Cobb, of Athens, Ga.; Captain John A. Cobb, of Americas, Ga.; Judge Andrew J. Cobb, of Athens, Ga.; James J. Cobb, of Macon, Ga.; Mrs. S. L. McBride, Mrs. T. W. Rucker, Mrs. Henry Jackson, Mrs. Hoke Smith, Mrs. A. W. Hill, of Atlanta.

The body.will reach Atlanta this mornIng, and funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Theron H. Rice from the residence of Mr. W. J. Milned, 429 Courtland street, Thursday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons; John A. Whitner, Jr., Whitner Howard, Henry F. Whitner, Caspar S. Whitner, Charles W. Milner, John Charles Whitner.
