About Sarah Williams
Sarah was born in 1834 in the main bedroom of the Treaty House in Waitangi. When only three months old a fight broke out between two groups of Maori who were visiting to discuss a dispute over land, with one group firing muskets at the other who ran into Treaty House for cover. Agnes grabbed her son, but Sarah's cradle was empty. She has been picked up by one of the men who was sheltering her under his cloak. At age 19 she married John William Williams (son of Rev Henry Williams) and was a mother to 11 children - Debbie McCauley.
