Saul was assigned to General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia under General James Longstreet's First Corps. He fought at: Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chattanooga Siege, Knoxville Siege, The Wilderness Spotsylvania Courthouse, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, Cedar Creek, Sayler's Creek, Appomattox Courthouse and other campaigns the 50th fought. He was wounded at Cedar Creek, VA, October 19, 1864. He was one of only 7 men that went through the entire Civil War with the company. He stood with the few remaining men and Captain Lott Townsend to represent Colquitt County at the Appomattox surrender.
