• The Sabiston surname originates with "Sebastian" Sabiston a survivor of a shipwreck of a Spanish Armada ship, most likely the El Gran Grifón that arrived at Fair Isle on 27 September 1588 trying to find a haven to effect repairs, she anchored in Swartz Geo, but the tide drove the ship ashore so that she wrecked on the rocks of Stroms Hellier in the Shetland Islands. The survivors that stayed on and made a home for themselves in the Orkney islands, rather than being repatriated to Spain, were known collectively as the "Westray Dons". One such, is the progenitor of this surname. His forename or surname, was probably Sebastian and to the locals unaccustomed to foreign names have assumed "Sabiston" as his surname and to his progeny ever since
