Subject: Re: Hessians soldiers in Frederick Co.
Message: Thanks for the comments etc. Yes, my ancestor John SebastionShehan (Johanne Sebastion Schuechen according to a family tree puttogether in the late 1800s) was listed lst on the 1788 tithable list ofNelson Co. VA (now KY) However. I have found one other Johanne SebastionSchuechen in various records.
There is a a Nelson Co. Ky court record in 1808 which proves the spellingof Schuechen as his "fromerly" name. The 1880 Nelson co KY census, a dauis age 80 and gives Germany as the place of birth of her father.
GERMAN SETTLERS OF PA, by Hoches, p 172. (Philadelphische Correspondenz) "Feb 22 1785 Jacob Fisher, reformed Schoolmaster at the stone church, Bern Township,Berks Co., eight miles above Reading inquires for Sebastian Schechen andJacob Duenschman, born in Niedermerschbach, near Hochenburg. They leftAmsterdam on May 29 last for Philadelphia."
I got very excited when I found this about 5 years ago. However theMorman Stake near my home could not give me any info on the two townsmentioned above.. They even called Salt Lake. I ordered a film ofbaptisms of Germans records, did find the surname Schuechen etc.. but..nothing I could put together or feel anywhere near comfortable with.
My Sebastian Shehen settled in an area which became known as Germantown, near present day Bardstown Ky. in 1788,. died there intestate @ 1814,nice estate etc. (including gold) children under age except for theoldest Peter.
Several other German families who settled in the same area in the sametime frame can be proven to have come from Frederick Co. MD. however I donot find anything in Fred,. Co. Md to support my Schuechen/Shehan.
Nor have I found the Jacob Duenschman mentioned in the account found inthe Philadelphia newspaper. Of course the clerks probably destroyed hislast name.
PA GERMAN PIONEERS, by Strassburger, 1980, p 3 has a list of passengerson board the ship, Adolph, Captain Matthew M. Clarkson from Amsterdam,Aug 27 1785 on this list is
Johann Bastian Sulion and a Joann Jacob D (with sm o at top)
Being very... broad minded I could say that these two were the SebastianSchuechen and Jacob Duenchman mentioned in the newspaper query by Jacobfisher of Berks Co. PA, Schoolteacher.
Oddly enough a granddaughter of Sebastian Shehan(Schuechen) m a JacobFisher b 1836, d 1906 (from Switzerland) in Nelson co. Ky in 1889.
Unfortunately this is where my research stands at present.
The Sebastian Scheuchen, Hessian Soldier could also be my ancestor. The1810 Nelson co. Ky census has the age group for my Sebastian Shehan asover 45.
I simply have not found anything to definitely prove my SebastianShehan/Schuechen prior to 1788.
