Sébastien de Brossard was born in 1655 in Dompierre in Orne. Born into a family of the old French nobility, he would include his ancestors Charles of France, count of Valois (grandson of saint Louis) and Hélène de Brossard. His studies at the college of the Jesuits, and then at the University of Caen, in philosophy, science and theology, enable it to acquire a solid intellectual formation. During his university studies, his musical education is limited to learning the lute. To 1678, after having been ordained a priest, he moved to Paris and sees rise in him a true musical vocation. It began, as an autodidact, methodical studies exploring with treated greed and partitions, that tirelessly collect his life during. It will constitute a large library he will bequeath to the end of his life (after to have prepared the catalogue) in the Royal Library. This collection is currently the most important background of early music of the National Library of Paris
