About Second Lieutenant Eric Fernandez Yarrow
ERIC FERNANDEZ YARROW was the second son of Sir Alfred and Lady Yarrow, formerly of Woodlands, Blackheath. He was born at Blackheath on January 5, 1895.
In 1906 he went to St. Andrew's, Eastbourne, and from there proceeded to Oundle, entering Grafton House in January 1909. He remained at Oundle until July 1913. He was a member of the XV (Captain in January 1913) and prominent at the Athletic Sports.
In October 1913 Yarrow went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, and passed the qualifying examination for the Mechanical Science Tripos, but being keenly interested in Social Reform he was intending to take up Political Economy when the war broke out.
Obtaining a commission in the 7th Battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (T.F.), he joined his regiment at Bedford. With them he went to France in December 1914, his rank then being Lieutenant.
He was killed by a shell near Ypres on May 8, 1915.
An Officer wrote: "His gifts as a leader were evident at home,but after reaching the firing line these quickly developed and increased, until his men would literally have followed him anywhere."
After his death he was mentioned in dispatches.
Eric Fernandez Yarrow was born on 5 January 1895. He was the son of Sir Alfred Fernandez Yarrow, 1st Bt. and Minnie Florence Franklin.
