Selig Sigmund Auerbach

Born in Recklinghausen, Germany where her father was the Rabbi of the congregation. The Nazis were in control and her birth certificate and passport are both stamped with the Nazi swastika. Her father escapes with her to Holland in 1939, followed by her mother shortly after. They stay in Holland with his sister for a short time, then go to England where they are interned as "Germans". Freed, they remain in England for a year and then travel to the U.S. Her father, Orthodox, cannot obtain a rabbinical position as an Orthodox rabb in the U.S, and accepts a position as a Conservative rabbi. His Orthodox leanings are sometimes at odds with the congregation, and he travels from congregation to congregation, eventually becoming Rabbi in Alexandria, Virginia, where Morton meets and in a whirlwind courtship of 10 days, becomes engaged to Chana, and married 3 months later.
