Seth Eugene Hanscom

Seth Eugene Hanscom was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on 12 April 1852, the second son of Alexander S. and Clarissa E. W. (Nutt) Hanscom. His parents moved back to Chatham, New Hampshire soon after his birth, and he was to spend his entire life in that community.

Seth was married in Chatham on 24 August 1873 to Estella Cobb, b. in Chatham, NH, 26 May 1854, daughter of Albion Paris Cobb (who died in the Civil War) and his wife, Elizabeth P. (Eaton) Cobb. Estella died in Chatham on 23 February 1932, age 77 years, of pneumonia. As a young woman, Estella taught school in Chatham. She later taught her husband to read and write.

Seth Hanscom was a prominent farmer, lumberman, and stonecutter in Chatham. He made his fortune by clearing trees off Mount Baldface and hauling granite off the highest peaks.

In 1897, he built the family homestead, which still stands on the Chatham Center Road. He suffered from lip cancer in his later years and died in Chatham on 29 May 1935, age 83 years.
