Sever J. Johnson was born Nov. 2, 1866, the son of Johannes and Britha Swiggum Johnson, in the town of York, Green county, and was baptized in the York Evangelical Lutheran church on December 26 of that year. He attended school in the old Swiggum school, later known as Sunnyside, and was confirmed in the York church by the Rev. Jon Fjeld.
He was married in 1892 to Miss Rachel Albertson, and to them were born five children: Hilda, Lulu, Alvin, Daisy and Hans. She died in June, 1904. They farmed at first on the old homestead where he was born, but in 1895 they purchased the farm in York which continued to be his home until he moved to Mt. Horeb in 1947.
He was married in 1909 to Miss Andrienne (Annie) Peterson of the town of York. She passed away in 1930. To this union were born six sons: Ernest, Lloyd, Robert, Knute, Amos and Burley.
Mr. Johnson was active in community affairs until a few years ago. He served on the Green County Board for 19 years as chairman from the town of York. He was known to many by his work in insurance.
In 1935 he was married to Mrs. Emma Hustad Offerdahl of McFarland.
They lived on the farm rented to his sons until 1947 when he sold the home where he had resided for 52 years and purchased a home in Mt. Horeb. Here he lived until a few days before his death when he was taken to St. Mary's hospital, Madison, where he died on March 3, 1950, at the age of 83.
He was well known in the Blanchardville and New Glarus area and leaves a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers John and Lewis, and a sister Ragnild. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his widow, one sister Mrs. O.R. (Carrie) Olson, and one brother Martin of Blanchardville; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Lokken of Mt. Horeb, Mrs. Fred Tank of Middleton and Mrs. Andrew Hegland of Madison; eight sons, Hans, Lloyd, Robert and Amos of Blanchardville, Alvin of Sacramento, California, Ernest of Verona and Knute and Burley of Belleville; 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the home in Mt. Horeb at 1:00 Monday afternoon and at 2 at the York church. Six sons: Ernest, Lloyd, Robert, Amos, Knute and Burley were pallbearers. Interment was in the (Old) York cemetery. A crowded church was testimony to the respect of many friends in the vicinity. Rev. M. A. Sorenson officiated.
