OBITUARY THE DEPOSIT COURIER DEPOSIT, DELAWARE CO, NY WEDNESDAY, 29 MAY 1918

EVERETT BLANSHAN, 73 CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES

Everett Blanshan, for many years a resident of Deposit, died at his home, corner of Front and River streets, last Wednesday afternoon, after an illness of several weeks. He was seventy-three years of age.

He was born in Ulster County, NY and came to Deposit at an early age. He married Miss Alice D. Peters, of this village.

He was one of the first to enlist, at the age of sixteen, in the Civil War, serving in the infantry of Co. C, 27th NY Volunteers. He was discharged at the end of a year due to illness. On leaving the hospital, he re-enlisted in Co. H, 1st NY Veteran Cavalry, being Orderly Sergeant and serving until the end of the war.

He is survived by two daughter, Mrs C I Mills, of Rockroyal and Mrs W G Whiting of this village; two sisters, Mrs Augustus Reinhart of Kingston, NY and Mrs Frank Carver of Ellenville.

Burial was in Laurel Hill Cemetery. ______________________________________

Everett Benjamin Blanshan was born on 13 Apr 1845 in Wawarsing, Ulster Co, NY the son of Benjamin Freer Blanshan and Elizabeth A. Russell.

He married Miss Alice D. Peters in 06 Jan 1867 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, the daughter of Henry Peters and Almira Hulce, both members of first families of the Village of Deposit.

He served in the Civil War first enlisting on 13 Oct 1861 into Co. C, 27th NYS Infantry. While with the 27th he fought at the battles of Seven Days' Fight, Second Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was discharged on 09 Feb 1863 at U.S. General Hospital, Fairfax Seminary, Fairfax Co, VA.

He then re-enlisted as a First Sergeant on 17 Jul 1863 into Co H, 1st NYS Veteran's Cavalry at Deposit, Delaware Co, NY. While serving in the Veteran's Cavalry he fought at the battles of New Market, Piedmont, Martinsburg, Sharpsburg, Lynchburg, Harper's Ferry, Whitehouse Landing and the Appomattox Campaign. He was Honorably discharged and mustered out on 20 Jul 1865 at Camp Pratt, WV.

On 05 Aug 1882, Everett was inducted as a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) - Lewis L. Eggleston Post #184, Deposit, Broome Co, NY - Membership No. 58

Alice and Everett had three daughters: Almira E., Fanny and Maud E.

Everett died on 22 May 1918 in Deposit, Delaware Co, NY, aged 73 Years 1 Months 9 Days. _____________________________________
