About Sgt. Irwin Burnett Arnold, (USA)
Irwin Burnett Arnold of Champaign, Illinois, aged 75, died while visiting at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louise Hampton, in Rogersville, Tennessee on Sunday, July 20, 1919, following a stroke that occurred in Illinois on Saturday prior to his trip.
Irwin B Arnold was born May 6, 1844 in Galena, Delaware County, Ohio, the son of Victor and Anna Maria Condit Arnold. He enlisted in the US Army on 19 Aug 1862 during the Civil War at the age of 18, serving in Co G, 96th OHIO Inf. He was promoted to Full Corporal on 01 Nov 1862; Promoted to Full Sergeant on 01 Apr 1864; Mustered out on 07 Jul 1865 at Mobile, AL. He was taken prisoner and held in the Confederate prison for over 7 weeks. He also served in the transportation dept. during the Spanish War.
He was engaged in various business ventures in Champaign, Illinois and at one time ran for mayor, and was president of the National Shoe Dealers Association.
He was first married in 1867 to Emma Victoria Shaw from Alexandria, Licking County, Ohio. To this union three daughters were born; Gertrude (married Edwin M Campfield) and Edna V (married Gerald P Lumsden). A daughter Myrtle died as an infant. Emma Victoria died in 1873.
Irwin Arnold married second to Amelia Lovelace Avery, widow of Thomas Avery, on Aug 1873. They were the parents of two daughters, Louise Abbie Arnold (married Wade M Hampton) and Alice B Arnold (married Rollin Baker). Amelia died in 1908.
His last marriage was in 1910 to Lissie May Lindsey Strother, widow of Anthony B Strother of Hancock County, Ohio. She died in 1918 and her informant states on her death certificate that Lissie and Irwin were divorced at the time of her death. She was laid to rest by her first husband in Hancock County, Ohio.
Irwin Burnett Arnold was laid to rest Tuesday, Jul 22nd, in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Champaign County, Illinois.
