About Sgt. John Blackstock

John Blackstock, born in 1758, died May 28, 1797. A native of Scotland, he enlisted on July 16, 1779 in Captain John Irvine’s Company of the South Carolina Militia and served until May 12, 1780. He rose to the rank of sergeant by the time he was discharged from service.

John Blackstock was active as a Mason. He was past Master of St. John's Lodge #6, and late Grand Secretary. He was buried at Christ Church Cemetery, Frederica, Georgia and interred with Masonic rites.

Should not be confused with another Revolutionary War soldier of same name: John Blackstock born April 1753 in Newtownards, PA; married Naomi Langston; and died Sept 1785 in Elizabeth City, NC and buried in Overman's Cemetery, NC. Revolutionary War military service info in "Captain John Irvin's Militia" is listed for John Blackstock as a "Private Horseman".

The information on the two Blackstock soldiers comes from

The sources of the information in the GASSAR book include: (1) Mary Warren's book, entitled Marriages & Deaths 1763-1820 which refers to a newspaper obituary in the June 2, 1797 issue of the Columbia Museum & Savannah (GA) Advertiser(I also obtained a copy of the obit from microfilm) which gives the death as May 28, 1797 (not 1793 as listed in the book) burial and Masonic info and states that he was 39 years old (which would indicate a birth of about 1758 and not 1753 as listed in the book). The obit does not refer to his Revolutionary War service. (2) The military info comes from Bobby Ross' book, entitled Roster of South Carolina Patriots in the American Revolution.
