Luther Terry Tuttle was born in New York November 19, 1825. His father, a ship builder, died while Luther was 14 months old. His mother joined the L.D.S. church when Luther was 12 years old and moved to Missouri. He became enthused over California and July 1846, joined the Mormon Batallion to secure transportation to the coast. He was made orderly sergeant of this organization. "Don't you find it hard these times to meet expenses?" Hard? Man alive' I meet expenses at every turn.

Three days before joining he married Abigail Haws of Council Bluffs. He received honorable discharge from the batallion and returned to Council Bluffs, engaging in the fur trade, lumbering building a saw mill and later a grist mill. He lost his wife and in 1850 married her sister, Lola Haws. They came to Manti in 1863. They raised a family of six children, Mr. Frank P. Tuttle of this city, and Mrs. Ethella Hosford of California being the only ones to survive him. His first business venture in Manti was in general merchandise with E W. Fox, they selling to the Manti Co-op. In 1875 he and Harrison Edwards established the store bearing his name.

Mr. Tuttle took a prominent part in church and public affairs. He was twice elected mayor, councilor several times and represented this county in the territorial legislature four years. In 1890 he organized the Manti City Savings Bank of which he remained president until January 1915. He was also interested in the sheep business.
