Shadrach Winslow graduated at Yale in 1771, studied medicine, and became an eminent physician and surgeon. On Jan'y 6, 1772, he was elected at Freetown " town's grammar schoolmaster for two months at 40 shillings per month and 6 shillings per week for board." In the Revolution he sided strongly with the Colonists and contributed largely to fitting out an armed vessel in which he sailed as surgeon. He was taken prisoner by the British, detained for a time off the coast of Spain, and afterwards imprisoned on the " Old Jersey Prison Ship " in New York harbor. Here he suffered many privations, and his health was seriously impaired. After his release he settled in Foxboro, where he had a very extensive medical practice and gained a high reputation.
