Brief overview:

Shane (30), was stabbed to death as he walked along Stamford Hill Road in Greyville at 4am on 16th March 2000. When Sinclair collapsed in a pool of blood, Moses Nkala removed his takkies (sneakers) and fled. He was arrested nearby.

At the time of his death, Sinclair was about to be medically boarded because of blindness in one eye and paralysis on the left side of his body. He was disabled after being hit by several bullets during a shoot-out with a robber a year previously.

    • An 18-year-old man who killed a disabled police officer for his takkies was given life imprisonment by the Durban High Court.
    • Passing sentence, Judge Vivienne-Niles Duner told Nkala that he had destroyed a human life because of greed. She said Sinclair's disability had made it difficult for him to defend himself. She said crime was not only instilling fear in ordinary people but was driving overseas tourists away. "People like you look for easy pickings," she told Nkala, adding that the courts were, however, trying to make the country safe again. She said there was only one kind of punishment for Nkala - a lifetime in jail.
