About Sharon Meen

I am an historian whose research focuses on German-Jewish communities in eastern Germany, particularly in the state of Thüringen. I currently have two research projects; working with geni.com allows me both to share information and add to my knowledge from the contributions of other geni.com members.

In 2008, I started a project of reassembling the Jewish community of the Kleinstadt of Themar, Thüringen. [See http://judeninthemar.org - a bilingual website]. Soon the stories of Themar’s Jewish families led to finding links to other communities in Thüringen, Bavaria, and elsewhere, from which Jewish families came to Themar in the late 1800s. Now there are links to Jewish communities throughout Germany and the world. I hope to post profiles of all members of families that link to Themar and connect them to other family members through the World Tree.

The second project focuses on the two deportations of Thüringen Jews in 1942. In May 1942, the first deportation transported over 500 Jews from cities, towns, and villages in Thüringen to Belzyce Ghetto in the Lublin District; in September 1942, the second deportation carried Thüringen Jews to Theresienstadt Ghetto. [See: http://judeninthemar.org/belzyce/ and http://judeninthemar.org/3071-2/.

2022 marked 80 years since these deportations; it is my aim to develop Geni profiles for those deported that includes family members and connect them to other family members through the World Tree.
The first major result of this research has been the publication of the bilingual website insghettobelzyce.org, Belzyce Ghetto: The Fate of Thüringen Jews/ins Ghetto Belzyce: Das Schicksal Thüringer Juden.
