Sheila Margaret Stander (1937 - 2003)

Brief overview:

Sheila (66), was raped before being brutally murdered on farm Waterval in Paarl during the Easter weekend of 2003. Stander devoted her life to help the previously disadvantaged in South Africa, as an anti-apartheid activist as well as a member of Black Sash and various women's organisations.

Phumzile Tondiswa, Wilhelm Ross, Gershwin Pietersen, Michael Donkiri and Lukas Donkiri were arrested. Pietersen and Michael Donkiri were convicted in the Cape High Court on the three charges as well as charges of housebreaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Tondiswa and Wilhelm Ross were only convicted of housebreaking and robbery and jailed for an effective five years. Lukas Donkiri was acquitted on all the charges. The sentences were passed in the Cape High Court by Deputy Judge President Jeanette Traverso. She said it counted as mitigating factors that the accused were youths when the incident took place. She therefore did not give them the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment for the murder.
