SHELTON (DENVIL) VICKERS
Shelton (Denvil) Vickers, 74, of Gladwin died Friday, Aug. 18, 1995 at MidMichigan Regional Medical Center - Midland. Born Oct. 30, 1920 in Clendenin, W. Va., he came to Gladwin County as a teenager. Mr. Vickers attended Beaverton Schools where he was a star basketball player during high school. He worked locally in the oil fields. After serving his country in the Navy during World War II, Mr. Vickers lived and worked in Grand Rapids for Mclnerny Spring& Wire.
He married the former Loretta Ashley July 30, 1946 in Kentucky. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Steven of Grand Rapids; one daughter, Jeanne and husband Chris Boron of Livonia; one brother, Charles of Gladwin; one sister, Betty Edick of Gladwin; and one granddaughter, Lisa Boron of Livonia. He was preceded in death by one brother, George; and 2 sisters, Gwendolyn Vickers and Eileen Moore.
Services were held at 8:30 p.m. Saturday from the Sisson Funeral Home in Gladwin with Elder Merle Guiney officiating. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 8-23/1995 Column – 1 Page – 6.

Shelton D. Vickers recently sent home, a dinner menu from the USS Stack on which he is serving as a seaman. Here's what the Navy is serving for dinner to our boys in service—-"Cream of tomato soup and crackers; roastyoung turkey; ripe olives, mixed pickles, cranberry sauce, Hawaiian salad; apple dressing, giblet gravy, baked Virginia ham; mashed potatoes, French peas, candied sweet potatoes, buttered asparagus tips; hot mince pie; golden rard sauce; ice cream; bread, butter, coffee, lemonade, hot rolls and cigarettes." BMkr 3/c Shelton D. Vickers, Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Shelton Vickers, of Gladwin, is on the battleship South Dakota, which will lead the major contingents into San Francisco Bay, with Adm. Halsey aboard. He has been in service for over three years, served on the destroyer, Springfield, in combat action against Kyushu and Honshu; on March 23, 1944 they began the first strikes against Okinawa, from that time until the end of May they engaged in the operations there, fighting off Kamikazes and otherwise supporting the Army and Marine forces who went ashore April 1. On June 1, they arrived at Leyte, leaving there on June 29. Strikes against the home islands were launched against Kyushu, Tokyo, North Honshu and Hokkaido, Kobe and Kure Naval Base. To Gladwin and Beaverton folks he was known as Denvil. Gladwin County Record 10/10/1945
