About Shifra Rosenthal
Maiden name pronounced HOO-chin.
Believed to have been born in Jaffa, Palestine (Israel). She told me [grandson Richard] that she believed that her parents had emigrated from Lithuania. We believe that she took a job as a kindergarten teacher in Petah Tikva. Shortly after marriage, her husband was discharged from Great Britain's Royal Fusiliers [see letter of recognition from King George in Richard's photos], and the couple moved to the United States.
Just prior to their son's bar-mitzvah, the three returned to Palestine with the intention of settling there. They initially lived with Shifra's family in Bais Yaakov, which at that time was undeveloped—no electricity or running water. They eventually moved to Rechovot, which offered those sorely missed conveniences. However, son Leonard was unable to adjust to the new surroundings. With his dislike of the area, along with the failure of his father's business ambitions, the family returned to Baltimore.
