About Shimon Simon Rabinowitz
GEDCOM Note
Listed in Jenny's death certificate as Shima
Per Esther Radoff Perl (1980), "My grandfather, Shimon, was renowned as a scholar and authority on the Torah, Talmud, or whatever it was that the old time melameds studied. That was his life -- studying or "lehrening" as it was called, and he did very little to support himself or his family. He had the education and qualifications to be a rabbi, but never worked at that much in his life. He was noted as being a member of an illustrious family of scholars and rabbis. When he lived in Houston, I know he occasionally officiated at High Holiday services, being both rabbi and cantor. He was reputed to have an exceptionally fine voice, and I remember my mother making him a concoction of honey and egg yolds, (which was supposed to be beneficial to the throat) for him to to drink before he worked.
