About Shirley Saltzman

http://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/life_cycles/deaths/obituaries/ar...

Shirley Saltzman (nee Rosenberg), 90, of Palm Beach, Fla., died Oct. 12, 2014. Shirley lived most of her life in Cleveland. She attended John Hay High School and worked for the U.S. Army map service during World War II. Her next job, as a secretary for Bobbie Brooks, Inc., would change her life dramatically: there she married the boss – her husband of 56 years, the late Maurice Saltzman. Shirley shared in her husband’s extraordinary life in business and leadership of the Cleveland Jewish community. She helped him arrange countless functions, raise funds and make pioneering contributions to various institutions in the Cleveland area and Israel. Among these were Mt. Sinai Medical Center, Bellefaire and Temple Emanu El. She was an early supporter of both the old and new Cleveland Hillel buildings. After Maurice’s death in 1990, Shirley continued to honor his legacy of philanthropy through founding the Saltzman Youth Panel at the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. She was so proud of the many young people who took the time to learn about Federation’s work and how to make difficult decisions about how funds should be allocated in the community. She hoped this would plant the seeds for a new generation of Jewish leaders in Cleveland and beyond. In her private life, Shirley was deeply devoted to her family. She is survived by her daughters, Jude Bea and Lorrie Fromson, five grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers, Dr. Saul Rosenberg and Dr. Jess Rhodes. Her youngest daughter, Terry Silvers, passed away in 2012. Beyond family, Shirley’s passion was for her art. From the age of 12, she started taking classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and she continued working in oil, acrylic and other media throughout her life. She was often reluctant to show her work, but she displayed it prominently in the houses she designed in Shaker Heights, Hunting Valley and Palm Beach.
