Shmuel was a shochet, a ritual slaughterer of poultry and meat. He was a medic in the Hungarian Army. Volvish and Abe both said that he learned Torah constantly and was a tzaddik. He said Tikkun Chatzos, a special prayer said by righteous individuals around midnight. Abe said he was very strict.
He was taken to Auschwitz in 1944 with most of his family, at the age of 55. Someone saw Shmuel on a 3-month shift at the crematorium and then he was never seen again. It was common for the Nazis to assign men this job and then kill them so no one would have evidence of their heinous actions. (Many Jews who lived in the Hungarian-Czechoslovakia Carpathian Mountain region observed yahrtzeit for their family members on the holiday of Shavuos, because most of them were taken later on in the war, and most were brought to Auschwitz Shavuos-time.)
