Sidney Takle was born in Bristol, England in 1882. The Takle family arrived to New Zealand in 1884 when Sidney was 2 years old. He joined his father’s cloth merchant business in 1897 at 15 years of age, and finally became managing director in 1919. He also was one of the founders and chairman of Howard Abbott Limited a bedding manufacturers.
Robert Takle Sr. died in 1928 (described as ‘retired farmer’ which is odd) and we may assume that definitely after that date, if it hadn’t already long been, it became Takle Bros. Although Sidney had a number of siblings I was not able to find any mention of their involvement in the family business at all, however it is only Robert Quick Takle and Charles Thomas Takle who seem to have resided and had family in New Zealand. Charles had his career with Brown & Stewart, Auckland central stationery manufacturers, from 1897 until his retirement in 1939 so he is counted out, leaving Robert most likely as the business ‘brother.’
Sidney became a very successful businessman of note in Auckland, being president of the Auckland United Friendly Societies' Dispensary of Auckland, having a seat on the Hospital Board, being a committee member of the Auckland Advertising Club for a number of years, member of the Chamber of Commerce and also the Auckland Rotary Club. He was elected president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association by 1931.
He died in 1955 and the business possibly passed to his sons and those of his brothers as it was still operating into the late 1960s at least as evidenced by the promo ruler, however the last media mention are advertisements for a sales position in 1961 and Whites Aviation captured a photo of the business in 1963.
