Siegfried (68), and his wife, Ingrid Schadle (64), were attacked and shot dead in the dining room of their hotel, the Warburger Hof, in Wartburg, on 7th November 2007. Siegfried was shot in the head, and when Ingrid tried to press the panic button, she was shot in the chest.

    • In March 2010, Funokwakhwe Ncwane (42) (former employee) and Muntukayise Ngubane (35), who were charged for the murder, appeared in the Pietermaritzburg high court, and both pleaded not guilty. They were also charged with the attempted murder of chef Max Haller.
    • The alleged co-perpetrators were identified as Mbhekiseni Xulu (who died before the hearing), Msizeni Biyela and drivers of two getaway vehicles, Mzo Mthembu and Lucky Moses Mbonambi.
    • In April 2010, Muntukayise Ngubane was jailed for life. He was further sentenced to 15 years' jail for attempting to rob the Schadles. All sentences would run concurrently with a life term. Co-accused Funokwakhe Nwane, was acquitted of all three charges.
