Sigrid the Fair

  • According to Margareta Klausdotter's familiar, partly purely historical story of "Sigrid the fair" of lower burden than the man. Sigrid is known to the afterlife through the romantic late-medieval tale of the battle between Bengt Lagman and Birger Earl , in which the Earl must have been disarmed by Sigrid's beauty and wisdom. In fact, Sigrid and Bengt Magnusson married long after the earl of Birger Earl. The blessing is also known through Frans Hedberg's Wedding at Ulvåsa from 1865.

Was first married to Margareta , possibly born from Tjust, who was dead in 1275, when the husband of, among others. a. The salvation of her soul donated property in Östergötland and in Tjust hd in Småland to a canonate in Linköping, and then was married to Sigrid, who died in 1289 and is buried in Skänninge dominican monastery. Stories from Swedish history / Anders Fryxell

Chapter 9,

About Bengt the teammate and Sigrid the beautiful. (NOTE! Skröna, confusion between Birger Jarl and his brother with this later name, Bengt Magnusson. Birger Jarl had been dead about 10 years when Bengt married Sigrid the second time).

Birger Earl's all brothers were famous men. His one brother, Eskil, was a lawman in Westergötland, and married a very distinguished qwinna from Norrge. His second brother, Karl, was bishop of Linköping; his sister, Magnhild, was married to Härwed Ulf or Trolle, a rather rich and powerful man *). The third brother was named Bengt, and was the teammate in Östergötland. He took very strong love for a noble maiden named Sigrid, which neither was either rich or noble, but so beautiful that she was generally called Sigrid the fair. Earl Birger would not hear of this, for he thought the maiden was too little for her kindred, though she was noble; but Bengt Lawman did not heed his brother's will out here, but married Sigrid, his unspoken.

When the Earl found this, she sent Bengt a coat, one half of which was made of precious golden cloth, but the other of coarse and thin wadmal. By this he meant the dissimilarity that existed between Bengts and Sigrid's genealogy, in this way also scaring Bengt to separate Sigrid from himself. But in this place, he allowed the wadmalt to fill with gold, pearls and precious stones, so that the wadmals half remained the same, if not more expensive, than the other, then sent the cloak back to the earl instead of another swar. Of this, the Earl was even more enraged and greeted back with the commandment, that he would orally speak to his brother about this matter, adding in his ifwer some severe threats, which the envoy also told Bengt.

A little afterwards the Earl lets saddle his horses and rides with great company to Ulfåsa, where Bengt lived, intending to put an end to this matter. As soon as Bengt saw the earl's journey from afar, he escaped to the woods and left Sigrid alone at home to meet the angry brother-in-law, after he had given her good advice, however, how she ought to behave there. So she adorned herself with her most expensive clothes and most expensive jewelry, and her beauty there seemed even greater. As the Earl rode into the yard, Sigrid the fair stepped out, negated him for word, and received him with all the honor and whispers. But the earl was so moved by her beauty that he forgot his cruelty, ran down quickly from his haste, and took Sigrid into his arms, saying, "If my brother had this undone, I would do it myself;" whereupon he was let into the house and evaded. But Bengt was brought back straight from the woods, and was then rejoiced and reconciled between the brothers instead of the enmity enmity.

But Bengt teamman and Sigrid the fair lived a long time together on Ulfåsa and left behind many sons and daughters.

  • ) It is told that when Härwed Ulf was to bring this his bride home, some fighters emerged from the forest to fiercely abduct Magnhild, and had their captains disguised as a troll, so as to be able to frighten her guardians so much more easily. But Härwed did not let themselves be horrified, but assigned the troll a cut on the neck so hard that the head flew off, after which the other pre-stretched lupo went back to the forest, and Härwed was allowed to bring home his Magnhild. From that day on, Härwed changed his shield brand, which had previously been a running Ulf, and had this set a headless troll, called Trolle in st. f. Ulf, and descended from him the then infamous Trollestägt.

Berättelser ur swenska historien / Anders Fryxell

9 Kap.

Om Bengt lagman och Sigrid den fagra. (OBS!

Birger jarls alla bröder woro berömliga man.
