GEDCOM Note
Original painting by Elbert Porter. On March 20, 1874, under the direction of Brigham Young, a branch of the Order at Mt. Carmel was officially organized with one hundred nine members. The purpose was to have all things held in common except houses and the lots on which houses were located. Farming, stock-raising, and industries were to be operated for the good of all. Many units were organized, but few lasted very long. The Orderville United Order was the longest lasting communal living experiment of the Church. About 1883 the United Order was disbanded under advice from the Church authorities. Original painting by Elbert Porter.
