About Silas Wright Cohen

Silas Wright Cohen died at 6 p. m. yesterday, February 14, at his home in Sprakers. Mr.Cohen waa a native of Sprakers. Thedate of his birth was January 23, 1848,and hence be was 69 years of age.His parents were Henry Cohen andHannah Rothschild, natives of Germany,who many years ago located atSprakers. where they reared a largefamily. Of natural mercantile tendency,a,store was established whichhas grown to be one of the largestcountry stores in the state and of lateyears has been conducted by S. W.Cohen & Bro. (Oscar), and is familiarlyknown in this section as the storethat sells "everything and anything."• Silas Cohen was an enthusiastic Republicanand became very prominentand influential in the politics of thiscounty. In the days of the leadershipof the late Jacob Snell. of Fonda, longchairman of the Republican countycommittee, with whom he stood veryclose, he shared in the division of patronagethat fell to this county. Formany years~Mr. Cohen was a power inthe politics of the town of Root andfor a number of terms was Root'srepresentative in the board of supervisors.. Later he received the appointmentof superintendent of section No. 3 ofthe Erie canal. In the days of the oldcounty convention Mr. Cohen was afamiliar figure, and. while the representativefrom his town was small,yet he was a factor many times if notalways considered. He was sagaciousand wise to which he applied an acquaintancethat was wide, giving hima deserved place in the deliberationsand counsel of his party.About six months ago his health beganto fail and although medical aidhas been sought in many quarters, hisdecline was gradual until the end,which came as the result of a growthIn the stomach.The personal side of Mr. Cohen'slife was pleasant and made him enjoyableto chat or visit with. Hisdisposition was sunny. his greetingcordial and his discussions of publicaffairs timely and interesting. He wasdelightful in his home and from allphases of life in which he was aparticipant he will be missed, andlong remembered. He was a memberof Hamilton lodge, No. 79, F. and A.M.. of Canajoharie. Mr. Cohen is survived by his widow,formerly Miss Louise Lewi, of Albany;two sons, Henry L, of Schenectady,and Theodore L, of Sprakers; three'brothers, Oscar S„ of Sprakers. andEdward F. and Ellsworth, both ofSchenectady; two slaters, Mrs. HenryHellbronner and Mrs. Joseph S. Myers,both of Schenectady.Mr. Cohen was a member of TempleBeth Emeth in Albany, and the funeralwill be held there, probably Sunday,with burial in Albany. The Rev.Dr. S.
