Church, Music, and Commitment to His Community

When he was about eight, Simeon Cragun moved with his family in 1835 to Eagle Township, Boone County, Indiana, to a land grant awarded to his father for his service in the War of 1812. Elisha Cragun and his family had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and were close friends with the Henry Mower, Sr. family who were also Mormons. Simeon Cragun married Susannah, a daughter of Henry Mower, Sr.

Simeon and Susannah made their way across the plains to the west. They traveled in Captain Foote's company of 100, arriving in Salt Lake City on 25 September 1850. They lived one year in Cold Springs, Davis County, Utah Territory, and then were among the first to settle in Pleasant View, Weber County, in 1852.

The closest schools was more than two miles away, and it was hazardous for the children to walk so far in bad weather, so Susannah taught the area's first school in a room of their home. Simeon was active in church and civic affairs, and a great lover of music.
