About Simeon Shurtleff

Simeon Shurtleff, 1st child of Amasa Shurtleff and Fanny Brockway, was b. July 9, 1808, :graduated at Amherst College, in 1832; studied medicine at Pittsfleld; under the direction of Professors, Child and Parker; and graduated at the Berkshire Medical College, December 1835. He immediately commenced the practice of medicine at Simsbury, Ct. and Westbury, Mass., over twenty-five years, when failing health compelled him to relinquish it. He devoted his now leisure time in the pursuits of natural science. He collected specimens of most of the plants, minerals, and birds found in New England, but also devoted immense amount of time on conchology. His cabinets contained over 10,000 specimens of shells.

He married Jan 12,1838 with MARY ANN PHELPS, and died Dec. 23,1865, without children.

He was married to May Ann Phelps on January 12, 1837.

Simeon graduated at Amherst College in 1832, studied medicine under the direction of Professors Child and Parker, and graduated at Berkshire Medical College Dec 1835. He immediately practiced medicine at Simbury and 25 years later was compelled to retire because of failing health. He devoted all his leisure time to the pursuit of natural science and collected species of most the plants, minerals and birds of New England. Simeon made a special study of Conchology and had over 10,000 species of shells in his cabinets.
