There are two brothers who arrived in New France during the course ofthe XVII'th century who are the ancestors of our Rochon's. Their nameswere Simon and Gervais. At that time, it was one of the several namesbeing used with the word "Roche" (Rock), and which in certain cases, was adjoined to a simple article such as LaRoche, DesRoche, etc. Simon and Gervais were originally from Saint-Cosme-en-Vairais, whichis now a community of two thousand people, in the department ofSarthe, surrounding Mamers. The Rocheron brothers were the sons ofJulien and Martine Lemoyne. In the church where they received theirbaptism, you will find their surname engraved on a marble plaque, among other well known names of Quebec such as; Bisson, Bouchard,Fortin, Gasnier, Gagne, Pouliot, Rouillard, etc., which is a witnessof the contribution of Saint-Cosme-de-Vair and Notre-Dame-de-Vair tothe new colony. It was on 6 February 1633 the the oldest, Simon, was baptized. The 27August 1663, in front of the notary Fillion, he signed a marriagecontract with Mathurine Bisson, daughter of Florent and Jeanne Yvon.Mathurine was a widow of Nicolas Dupre, (Pre), and they had two boystogether. The Rocheron/Bisson marriage was celebrated on the 12September 1663,and is the second one recorded in the parish ofChateau-Richer. Simon adopted the children of her first marriage. Infact, for the census of 1667, when the couple was living on aconcession of land in the region of Lauzon, facing Quebec, we findthem under the "family roof" along their first daughter, Marguerite. The colonist owned five animals and had six acres of cultivated land.In 1681, Simon and his wife were still living in the region of Lauzon. He now owned ten animals and twenty acres ofworkable land. All oftheir children are now born, four boys and three girls. We areuncertain as to whether or not he had two boys named Charles. Theoldest, Etienne, was married twice, the first in the year 1693 withElisabeth Begin, daughter ofLouis and of Je anne Durand, and fiveyears later to Marie-Charlotte Jeanne, daughter of Robert andFrancoise Savard. Jean was the most prolific. In 1702, he took to the alter atSaint-Francois de L'Ile Jesus, Genevieve Garnier (or Grenier),daughterof Julien and Genevieve Hubou. The couple had thirteenchildren, of which six were boys, and five of these would eventuallymarry and start a family. Their progenitors would settle atSaint-Francois, Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, Mascouche and Lachenaie. It appears that the use of Rochon as a surname started with the secondgeneration. The contracts of marriage of the brothers Simon andGervais which were signed in front of the notaries Fillion and Auber, were with the original name brought from France. It is with thechildren of these two pioneers, that the modification had begun.Simon was the father of seven children and five acts of baptism havebeen found. Of these five, four names are recorded as Rochon. Thesurname of their oldest child however is recorded with the originalname of Rocheron. As for the children of Gervais, Rocheron appears ten times, and fivetimes with Rochon.
