About Simon Swerting

Wikipedia:=

Simon Swerting was the son of the later murdered councilor and mayor of the city of Visby, Hermann Swerting , and a brother of the Stralsund councilor Gregor Swerting. He was a. married to Hedwig von Attendorn [1] .

Swerting had been a councilor since at least 1364 and was elected mayor by the city council in 1370. After his uncle Jakob Pleskow, he was one of the most important military leaders of the city of his time and one of the most important diplomats of the Hanseatic League in the last quarter of the 14th century. As mayor, Swerting immediately took over the supreme command of the Lübeck fleet against King Waldemar IV of Denmark. The territorial troops , which Lübeck made available to Emperor Charles IV in 1377 for the siege of the Dannenberg fortress , were also under his command. [2]

He was the city's representative at many Hanseatic days from 1364 to 1388.

As a diplomatic representative of the city and the Hanseatic League, he was involved in peace negotiations with King Waldemar IV in Stralsund in the First Waldemark War in 1364, which in the following year led to the Peace of Vordingborg (1365) , and in 1375 for the Hanseatic cities in Bruges to protect interests of the pressed office there , then with King Charles V of France and with King Eduard III. from England. From this he received a relic of St. Thomas of Canterbury as a gift to the city for the St. Gertrude Chapel . In 1381 he was envoy in Skåne , in 1384 inFalsterbo and in 1385 for negotiations with Count Adolf VII von Holstein in Bad Oldesloe .

In 1387 Swerting was again as envoy of the Hanseatic cities in Flanders for negotiations in Antwerp and with Count Albrecht I of Holland in Dordrecht .

As an arbitrator, he mediated in 1383 between the knight von Lützow and the town council of Slagelse .

The sum that was paid as atonement for the murder of his father, he used together with his brother to purchase the Ovendorf estate [3] , the income of which was transferred to a vicariate , which was built in an atonement chapel in Wisby in honor of his father [4] was established. [2]
