Simon Baucher Whipkey and his wife Mary Jane Whipkey (Sanderson)lived in the Murphysboro, IL area from their marriage on April 4, 1844. They had thirteen children, ten of whom lived past childhood. As farmers in the 19th Century they faced perilous and sometimes fatal circumstances, ranging from working accidents to disease outbreaks. Both Simon and Jane died in 1871 but graves have not been located. It is believed that they were laid to rest with many of their family members in Holliday Farm Cemetery.
