About Sir Andrew Agnew, 3rd Baronet of Lochnaw

Biographical Summary

"Sir Andrew Agnew, Baronet [S 1629] of Lochnaw, 10th Hereditary Sheriff of Galloway, son and heir, succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1671, and was enfoeffed in his father's estates, 2 October 1671. In 1682 he was superseded as Sheriff for refusing to take the test act, but was restored, 25 April 1689, by the Grant Convention of Estates, of which he was a member. He was M.P. [S] for Wigtownshire, 1685, and 11689 till his death. He married (covenant dated 24 October 1656) Jane, daughter of Sir Thomas Hay of Park, 1st Baronet [S 1668] by Marion Hamilton, an illegit. daughter of James, Duke of Hamilton [S]. He was buried 9 June 1702."

  • Wife: The above text implies Jane was daughter of the 1st Baronet of Park, while in Volume III, page 341 describes her as sister to the 1st Baronet. The later is more likely.

Sir Andrew Agnew, 3rd Baronet (died 1702) was the son of Sir Andrew Agnew, 2nd Baronet and Lady Anne Stewart.

Succession He succeeded his father as 3rd Baronet Agnew, of Lochnaw on the latter's death in 1671. On his death in 1702 he was succeeded in the baronetcy by his third son, his elder sons having predeceased him.

Career He was Member of Parliament for Wigtownshire in 1685 and 1689–1702.

Family He married Jane Hay, daughter of Thomas Hay and Jean Hamilton (24 October 1656), and had issue:
