Biographical Summary

"The Hon. James Mackenzie, of Roystoun, co. Edinburgh, 3rd and youngest son of George Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Cromarty [S], by his first wife Anne, daughter of Sir James Sinclair, 1st Baronet [S 1631] of Canisbay, was born about 1671; inherited by entail, dated 1688, the estate of Roystoun aforesaid; was admitted Advocate, 19 November 1698, and created a Baronet [S], 8 February 1703/04 with rem. to heirs male whatsoever. He was made, 7 June 1710, a Lord of Session [S] under the style Lord Roystoun, sitting on the Bench for thirty-four years, and being considered one of the most expert judges in criminal cases. He married about 1707, Elizabeth, widow of Alexander Cockburn of Langtoun (died v.p. 22 August 1702, aged 42), daughter of Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh, King's Advocate of Scotland. He died s.p.m.s. at Edinburgh, 9 and was buried 15 November 1744 in the Greyfriars churchyard there, aged 73."
