About Sir John Maxwell of Calderwood

SIR JOHN MAXWELL OF CALDERWOOD

Sir John Maxwell is the son of Sir Robert Maxwell of Calderwood and his first wife Elizabeth Danielston (aka Elizabeth Denniston). His date or year of birth is not certainly known but he was still a minor child on 6 May1421, upon which date William Maxwell of Aikenhead is identified as his tutor, rather than his curator, and this circumstance suggests that he was at least fourteen years of age on this date. It seems reasonable to propose, therefore, that he may have been born before 6 May 1407. Memoirs of the Maxwells of Pollock I: p. 463
