Sir John Mundy was a descendant of an ancient Norman family descended form Godfrey Count of Mondaye, a London goldsmith and Lord Mayor of London.
He was born in Wycomb, son of William Munday. He purchased the manor of Markeaton in 1516 as well as Mackworth and Allestree, which are all now parts of Derby from Lord Audley.
In 1515 he served as a Sheriff of the City of London. Seven years later he became the Lord Mayor of London and was knighted in 1529 (some say 1523). He died in 1538.
Mundy married twice, having children with his second wife Juliana Browne, daughter of his mayoral predecessor, William Browne, and granddaughter of two mayors, John Browne and Edmund Shaa.
