About Sir John Stewart of Cardney,Kgt.



John Steuart was an illegitimate son of Robert II, King of Scots, by Mariota Cardney, daughter of John Cardney and sister of Robert Cardney, Bishop of Dunkeld 1396-1436. In 1394 John was mentioned as being educated at the University of Paris. On 12 February 1399 he received the lands of Cardney from his half-brother Robert III, king of Scots. John was knighted on 21 May 1424. He died in 1466.

"Sir John Steuart, Kt., 21 May, 1424, at Scone, 7th natural son of King Robert II (1371 to 1390) by Mariota, dau. of de Cardney of that Ilk, and sister of Robert de Cardney, Bishop of Dunkeld."

Sir John Stewart, got charter of Cardneys 1399, and of Airntully 1383. He was alive 1425. He married Jean, daughter of Sir John Drummond of Stobhall and sister of Queen Annabella. He left issue a son, Walter Stewart of Cardneys.

"The progenitor of the present family, possessing the barony of Dalguise, was Sir John Steuart, of Cardney, Lord of Dowallie, son of King Robert II., by Mariotta, daughter of John de Cardennie, or Cardney, of Ilk, in Perthshire. He married Jane, daughter of Sir John Drummond, of Stobhall, and sister of Annabella, queen of Robert III. His first charters appear to be dated in the year 1382, when he inherited, by his mother, the barony of Cardney, and other lands."
