Sir Robert Barnham, created a Baronet in 1663, was also M.P for Maidstone, from 1660 to 1679. He and his father represented Maidstone for 43 years. Before entering Parliament he had been imprisoned briefly in Leeds Castle by the County Committee in spite of strong remonstrances on the part of his father. Unlike his father, however, he seems always to have been a Royalist at heart and he certainly took part in the Kentish Rising of 1648, a rising sparked off by Parliament clamping down on religious and traditional observances at Christmas. At the coronation banquet of Charles ll in 1660 he was called on to perform the traditional, but it seems lapsed, service for his manor of Bilsington by carrying the last dish of the second course to the King's table and presenting him with three maple cups. Sir Robert died in 1685 and, passing over the daughters of his first marriage , left the manor of Boughton to his only child by his second marriage, a daughter Philadelphia, who three years earlier had married Thomas Rider from Essex.
Sir Robert Barnham, 1st Bt. was born circa 1606, the son of Sir Francis Barnham and Elizabeth Lennard. He married, firstly, Elizabeth Henley, daughter of Robert Henley, before 1636. He and Hannah Nichols obtained a marriage license on 18 August 1663. He died between May 1685 and June 1685, without surviving male issue. His will (dated 27 April 1685) was probated on 11 June 1685.
